Meanwhile Atlas had gone away and had made his way as fast as possible to the garden of the Hesperides, which was a few miles away.

When he had arrived there, he explained the reason for his coming and strongly urged his daughters to hand over the apples.

For a long time they hesitated; for they did not want to do this, because they had received this gift from Juno herself (as was said before).

Note. quod … accēpissent: the subjunctive shows the reason as the daughters' own: 'because (as they said) they had received'.

Atlas, however, at last persuaded them to obey him, and brought the apples back to Hercules.

Meanwhile Hercules, when he had waited several days and had received no news of Atlas's return, was greatly troubled by this delay.

48.6Tandem quīntō diē Atlantem vīdit redeuntem, et mox magnō cum gaudiō pōma accēpit; tum, postquam grātiās prō tantō beneficiō ēgit, ad Graeciam proficīscī mātūrāvit.

At last, on the fifth day, he saw Atlas returning, and soon received the apples with great joy; then, after he thanked him for so great a kindness, he hurried to set out for Greece.
