3.16.1Quō proeliō bellum Venetōrum tōtīusque ōrae maritimae cōnfectum est.

By this battle the war with the Veneti and the whole sea coast was finished.

3.16.2Nam cum omnis iuventūs, omnēs etiam graviōris aetātis in quibus aliquid cōnsiliī aut dignitātis fuit eō convēnerant, tum nāvium quod ubīque fuerat in ūnum locum coēgerant;

For not only had all the young men, and all the older men too who had any judgment or rank, gathered there, but they had also brought together in one place every ship they had anywhere;

Note. cum … tum: 'not only … but also'. nāvium quod ubīque fuerat: 'whatever ships there had been anywhere', a partitive genitive with quod.

3.16.3quibus āmissīs reliquī neque quō sē reciperent neque quem ad modum oppida dēfenderent habēbant.

and when these were lost, the rest had neither anywhere to retreat to nor any way to defend their towns.

Note. quō sē reciperent … quem ad modum … dēfenderent: indirect questions, 'where to retreat … how to defend'.

3.16.4Itaque sē suaque omnia Caesarī dēdidērunt.

So they surrendered themselves and all they had to Caesar.

3.16.4In quōs eō gravius Caesar vindicandum statuit quō dīligentius in reliquum tempus ā barbarīs iūs lēgātōrum cōnservārētur.

Caesar decided to punish them all the more severely so that in future the rights of envoys would be more carefully respected by the barbarians.

Note. eō gravius … quō dīligentius: 'all the more severely … so that the more carefully', quō + comparative introduces a purpose clause.

3.16.4Itaque omnī senātū necātō reliquōs sub corōnā vēndidit.

So he put their whole senate to death and sold the rest as slaves.

Note. sub corōnā vēndidit: captives were sold wearing a wreath, so the phrase means 'sold as slaves'.
