Read in Lectitō1.28.1Quod ubi Caesar resciit, quōrum per fīnēs ierant hīs utī conquīrerent et redūcerent, sī sibi pūrgātī esse vellent, imperāvit;
When Caesar found out about this, he ordered the peoples through whose territory they had gone to hunt them down and bring them back, if they wished to be blameless in his eyes;
Note. quōrum per fīnēs ierant hīs: the relative clause comes before its antecedent hīs.
1.28.1reductōs in hostium numerō habuit;
those brought back he treated as enemies;
1.28.2reliquōs omnēs obsidibus, armīs, perfugīs trāditīs in dēditiōnem accēpit.
all the rest he accepted in surrender once the hostages, weapons and deserters had been handed over.
1.28.3Helvētiōs, Tulingōs, Latobrigōs in fīnēs suōs, unde erant profectī, revertī iussit, et, quod omnibus frūgibus āmissīs domī nihil erat quō famem tolerārent, Allobrogibus imperāvit ut iīs frūmentī cōpiam facerent;
He ordered the Helvetii, Tulingi and Latobrigi to return to the lands they had set out from, and since all their crops were lost and they had nothing at home to keep off hunger, he ordered the Allobroges to give them a supply of grain;
1.28.3ipsōs oppida vīcōsque, quōs incenderant, restituere iussit.
he ordered them to rebuild the towns and villages they had burned.
1.28.3Id eā maximē ratiōne fēcit, quod nōluit eum locum unde Helvētiī discesserant vacāre, nē propter bonitātem agrōrum Germānī, quī trāns Rhēnum incolunt, ex suīs fīnibus in Helvētiōrum fīnēs trānsīrent et fīnitimī Galliae prōvinciae Allobrogibusque essent.
He did this chiefly for this reason: he did not want the land the Helvetii had left to stand empty, in case the Germans who live across the Rhine should cross from their own territory into the Helvetii's because of the quality of the land, and become neighbours of the Province of Gaul and the Allobroges.
Note. nē … trānsīrent: a negative purpose clause, 'so that the Germans would not cross'.
1.28.4Boiōs petentibus Haeduīs, quod ēgregiā virtūte erant cognitī, ut in fīnibus suīs conlocārent, concessit;
When the Haedui asked to settle the Boii in their own territory, because they were known for outstanding courage, he allowed it;
1.28.4quibus illī agrōs dedērunt quōsque posteā in parem iūris lībertātisque condiciōnem atque ipsī erant recēpērunt.
the Haedui gave them land and later received them into the same rights and freedom as they themselves had.
