This was most welcome and pleasing to the soldiers, as could be seen from their very signs of it, that men who had expected some deserved punishment should actually receive the reward of discharge.
For when a dispute was raised about the place and time of it, they all began to signal, by voice and by hand from the rampart where they stood, that they should be discharged at once, and that no pledge, however solemnly given, could be firm if it was put off to another time.
Note. ut statim dīmitterentur: 'that they should be discharged at once'. omnī interpositā fidē: 'however solemnly a pledge was given'.
BC 1.86.3paucīs cum esset in utramque partem verbīs disputātum, rēs hūc dēdūcitur, ut iī quī habeant domicilium aut possessiōnem in Hispāniā, statim, reliquī ad Vārum flūmen dīmittantur;
After a short debate on both sides, the matter is settled thus: those who have a home or property in Spain are to be discharged at once, the rest at the river Var;
Note. ad Vārum flūmen: the Var, the border between Gaul and Italy.
BC 1.86.3nēquid iīs noceātur neu quis invītus sacrāmentum dīcere cōgātur, ā Caesare cavētur.
Caesar guarantees that no harm shall be done to them and that no one shall be forced against his will to take the military oath.
Note. nēquid eīs noceātur: impersonal passive of noceō, 'that no harm be done to them'. sacrāmentum dīcere: 'take the military oath'.
