When Ulysses had waited from the seventh hour until evening, he was afraid that his companions were in danger, and he sent some of the others to find out what the reason for the delay was.

Note. veritus nē … versārentur: after verbs of fearing, nē means 'that'.

83.2Hī igitur in terram expositī ad vīcum quī nōn longē aberat sē contulērunt; quō cum vēnissent, sociōs suōs quasi vīnō ēbriōs repperērunt.

So these men were put ashore and went to a village which was not far away; when they had come there, they found their companions as if drunk with wine.

Then, when they had explained the reason for their coming, they tried to persuade them to return to the ship with them.

Note. causam veniendī: gerund in the genitive, 'the reason for coming'.

83.4Illī tamen resistere ac manū sē dēfendere coepērunt, saepe clāmitantēs sē numquam ex eō locō abitūrōs.

But they began to resist and to defend themselves by force, often shouting that they would never leave that place.

Note. clāmitantēs sē … abitūrōs: future infinitive in indirect statement (esse is left out).

Since this was so, the messengers went back to Ulysses without having done their task.

Note. rē īnfectā: ablative absolute, 'with the thing not done', i.e. without success.

When he learned this, he himself came to the place with all who had been left in the ship; and after urging his companions in vain to come back of their own accord, he tied their hands behind their backs and carried them back to the ship against their will.

Note. manibus … vinctīs is an ablative absolute: 'with their hands tied'.

83.7Tum ancorīs sublātīs quam celerrimē ē portū solvit.

Then he raised the anchors and sailed out of the harbour as quickly as possible.
