Read in Lectitō56.1Herculēs nihil malī suspicāns vestem quam Lichās attulerat statim induit; paulō post tamen dolōrem per omnia membra sēnsit, et quae causa esset eius reī magnopere mīrābātur.
Hercules, suspecting nothing bad, at once put on the robe which Lichas had brought; but a little later he felt pain through all his limbs, and wondered greatly what the cause of this was.
56.2Dolōre paene exanimātus vestem dētrahere cōnātus est; illa tamen in corpore haesit, neque ūllō modō abscindī potuit.
Almost dead with pain, he tried to pull off the robe; but it stuck to his body, and could not be torn away in any way.
56.3Tum dēmum Herculēs quasi furōre impulsus in montem Octam sē contulit, et in rogum, quem summā celeritāte exstrūxit, sē imposuit.
Then at last Hercules, as if driven by madness, went to Mount Oeta, and placed himself on a funeral pyre, which he built with the greatest speed.
Note. Gutenberg's text has 'Octam', a misprint for Oetam: Mount Oeta.
56.4Hoc cum fēcisset, eōs quī circumstābant ōrāvit ut rogum quam celerrimē succenderent.
When he had done this, he begged those who stood around to set fire to the pyre as quickly as possible.
56.5Omnēs diū recūsābant; tandem tamen pāstor quīdam ad misericordiam inductus ignem subdidit.
For a long time everyone refused; but at last a certain shepherd, moved to pity, put fire to it.
56.6Tum, dum omnia fūmō obscūrantur, Herculēs dēnsā nūbe vēlātus ā Iove in Olympum abreptus est.
Then, while everything was hidden by the smoke, Hercules, wrapped in a thick cloud, was carried off by Jupiter to Olympus.
