76.1Tandem post multa perīcula Iāsōn in eundem locum pervēnit unde profectus erat.

At last, after many dangers, Jason arrived at the same place from which he had set out.

76.2Tum ē nāvī ēgressus ad rēgem Peliam, quī regnum adhūc obtinēbat, statim sē contulit, et vellere aureō mōnstrātō ab eō postulāvit ut regnum sibi trāderētur; Peliās enim pollicitus erat, sī Iāsōn vellus rettulisset, sē regnum eī trāditūrum.

Then, landing from the ship, he went at once to king Pelias, who still held the kingdom, and showing him the golden fleece he demanded that the kingdom be handed over to him; for Pelias had promised that if Jason brought back the fleece, he would hand the kingdom over to him.

Note. pollicitus erat … sē regnum eī trāditūrum: indirect statement after a verb of promising, with the future infinitive.

After Jason had shown what he wanted done, Pelias at first made no answer, but remained silent a long time in the same gloom; at last he spoke as follows: "You see that I am already worn out with age, and there is no doubt that my last day is approaching.

76.4Liceat igitur mihi, dum vīvam, hoc regnum obtinēre; cum autem tandem dēcesserō, tū mihi succēdēs."

So let me hold this kingdom as long as I live; but when at last I have died, you will succeed me."

Note. Liceat mihi: a wish, 'may I be allowed'. dēcesserō: future perfect, 'I shall have died', where English says 'when I die'.

76.5Hāc ōrātiōne adductus Iāsōn respondit sē id factūrum quod ille rogāsset.

Persuaded by this speech, Jason replied that he would do what Pelias had asked.
