Cassivellaunus, as we have shown above, gave up all hope of a pitched battle, sent away most of his forces and kept about four thousand chariot-fighters; he watched our line of march, kept a little away from the road and hid in difficult wooded places; in the districts through which he had learned we would march he drove the cattle and people from the fields into the woods, and whenever our cavalry ranged too freely over the fields to plunder and lay waste, he sent his chariot-fighters out of the woods along every road and path, fought with our horsemen at great risk to them, and by this fear kept them from roaming more widely.

Note. This long sentence lists Cassivellaunus' tactics with a string of imperfects (servābat, excēdēbat, occultābat, compellēbat, ēmittēbat): things he did again and again.

What remained was that Caesar would not let the men stray far from the column of legions, and that the enemy were harmed by laying waste the fields and setting fires only as far as the legionaries could manage by their effort on the march.

Note. Relinquēbātur ut: 'what remained was that', a noun clause. tantum … quantum: 'only as much … as'.
