4.8.1Ad haec Caesar quae vīsum est respondit;

To this Caesar replied as seemed best;

4.8.1sed exitus fuit ōrātiōnis: sibi nūllam cum iīs amīcitiam esse posse, sī in Galliā remanērent;

but the end of his speech was this: he could have no friendship with them if they stayed in Gaul;

4.8.2neque vērum esse, quī suōs fīnēs tuērī nōn potuerint aliēnōs occupāre;

it was not right that men who had not been able to defend their own lands should seize those of others;

Note. nōn vērum esse: 'it was not right'. quī … nōn potuerint: the antecedent (eōs) is left out, 'men who could not'.

4.8.2neque ūllōs in Galliā vacāre agrōs quī darī tantae praesertim multitūdinī sine iniūriā possint;

and there were no empty lands in Gaul which could be given away without injustice, especially to so great a host;

4.8.3sed licēre, sī velint, in Ubiōrum fīnibus cōnsīdere, quōrum sint lēgātī apud sē et dē Suēbōrum iniūriīs querantur et ā sē auxilium petant: hoc sē Ubiīs imperātūrum.

but they might, if they wished, settle in the territory of the Ubii, whose envoys were with him complaining of the wrongs done by the Suebi and asking him for help: he would give the Ubii orders to allow this.

Note. hoc sē Ubiīs imperātūrum: 'he would order the Ubii to do this', i.e. to admit them.
