Read in LectitōBC 3.55.1Omnibus deinceps diēbus Caesar exercitum in aciem aequum in locum prōdūxit, sī Pompēius proeliō dēcertāre vellet, ut paene castrīs Pompēī legiōnēs subiceret;
On each of the following days Caesar led his army out in battle line onto level ground, in case Pompey wanted to fight, so that he brought his legions almost up to Pompey's camp;
Note. sī Pompeius … vellet: 'in case Pompey wanted', a conditional clause expressing Caesar's hope. ut paene castrīs … subiceret: 'so that he almost brought his legions up to the camp'.
BC 3.55.1tantumque ā vallō eius prīma aciēs aberat, utī nē tēlum tormentō adigī posset.
and his front line was only so far from Pompey's rampart that no missile shot by artillery could reach it.
Note. utī nē: 'so that not'. The front line stayed just out of artillery range.
BC 3.55.2Pompēius autem, ut fāmam opīniōnemque hominum tenēret, sīc prō castrīs exercitum cōnstituēbat, ut tertia aciēs vallum contingeret, omnis quidem īnstrūctus exercitus tēlīs ex vallō abiectīs prōtegī posset.
Pompey, however, to keep his reputation and men's good opinion, drew up his army in front of the camp in such a way that his third line touched the rampart, and the whole army, though drawn up, could be protected by missiles thrown from the rampart.
Note. ut fāmam opīniōnemque hominum tenēret: to keep up appearances, Pompey also deployed, but stayed close enough to his rampart to be covered by its missiles.
