Read in LectitōBC 1.38.1Adventū L. Vibullī Rūfī, quem ā Pompēiō missum in Hispāniam dēmōnstrātum est, Afrānius et Petrēius et Varrō lēgātī Pompēī, quōrum ūnus Hispāniam citeriōrem tribus legiōnibus, alter ulteriōrem;
On the arrival of Lucius Vibullius Rufus, who, as has been shown, was sent into Spain by Pompey, Afranius, Petreius and Varro, Pompey's legates, of whom one held Nearer Spain with three legions, the second Further Spain
Note. This long sentence runs on into the next. The main clause is Afrānius et Petrēius et Varrō … officia inter sē partiuntur, 'divide their duties among themselves'. quōrum ūnus … alter … tertius: 'of whom one … the second … the third', each with obtinēbat understood until the end. Varro is the great scholar M. Terentius Varro.
from the Castulo pass to the Anas with two legions, and the third the territory of the Vettones and Lusitania from the Anas with the same number of legions, divide their duties among themselves: Petreius is to set out from Lusitania through the Vettones with all his forces to join Afranius, and Varro with the legions he had is to guard the whole of Further Spain.
Note. saltū Castulōnēnsī: the Castulo pass in the Sierra Morena. ab Anā: 'from the Anas (Guadiana)'. uti … proficīscātur, … tueātur: an indirect command explaining the division of duties; uti is an older form of ut.
BC 1.38.3hīs rēbus cōnstitūtīs equitēs auxiliaque tōtī Lūsītāniae ā Petrēiō, Celtibēriae Cantabrīs barbarīsque omnibus quī ad Ōceanum pertinent, ab Afrāniō imperantur.
When these things had been settled, cavalry and auxiliaries are levied by Petreius from all Lusitania, and by Afranius from Celtiberia, the Cantabri and all the barbarians who reach to the Ocean.
Note. equitēs auxiliaque … imperantur: 'cavalry and auxiliaries are demanded'; imperō with the accusative of what is ordered and the dative of those who must supply it (Lūsītāniae, Celtibēriae, Cantabrīs, barbarīs).
BC 1.38.4quibus coāctīs celeriter Petrēius per Vettonēs ad Afrānium pervēnit, cōnstituuntque commūnī cōnsiliō bellum ad Ilerdam propter ipsīus locī opportūnitātem gerere.
When these had been mustered, Petreius quickly reaches Afranius through the Vettones, and by common consent they decide to wage the war at Ilerda because of the advantages of the place itself.
Note. quibus coāctīs: 'when these had been gathered'. propter ipsīus locī opportūnitātem: Ilerda controlled the bridge over the Sicoris and the road from the Pyrenees.
